This home page is not under construction. However I don't have enough round tuits to keep updating it and so, as folk keep whinging that my previous homepages got horribly out of date, I'll try to not put any time sensitive information on this version! If you think something is out of date, just pretend its really 1995. Then some of this can be considered as predictions.
I'm a computing person. Have been since I was a child. Whilst this is now work its also really a major hobby as well. Since getting my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Loughborough University, I've worked for a variety of the University's departments including (but not limited to):
I've also worked from some third parties in the past but haven't done that for a long time as it means filling in tax forms and quite frankly the hassle isn't worth the resulting cash. The University has been a pretty good employer and I can usually have a enough part-time jobs on the go from various departments to keep me employed full-time (or as full-time as I want to be).
If you are a head hunter and are now thinking, "Hey, I'll cold call this guy and see if I can persuade him to leave academia and join some huge faceless "Real World" company or some total unstable "exciting" startup!", then STOP RIGHT NOW. I don't like being spammed by either phone, email or junk mail whatever the product or service so I won't respond well. The promise of $100,000 paychecks will not help sway me from this position. Neither will fast cars or the best private medical insurance in this galaxy. You have been warned!
Have I mentioned I do the odd spot of computing? Ahh, OK...
I also volunteer with the Type One Locomotive Company at the Great Central Railway. We take ancient diesel locomotives out of scrapyards, bash them about a bit, give them a lick of paint and then thrash them up and down the line. Well, actually, no, there's a bit more to it than that. Locomotive restoration is a nice break from working in the normal computing office environment and involves lots of heavy engineering, manual labour, never-ending painting and learning how stuff was done before solid state electronics came along. Jolly good fun and the T1LC lads (and most of the other folk on the GCR) are a great bunch to work with. I've also got involved with the restoration of Rushcliffe Halt station between East Leake and Ruddington on the GCR(N) line.
Right that's all folks. No rotating pictures of my head, no "aaawwwww" pictures of pet cats, no three quarter views of my favourite car/van/train/plane/etc. In fact no pictures at all. Just like the web in the Good Old Days(tm). Also no lists of how to contact me in 173 ways, pointers to favourite drinks, places to eat, foodstuffs, pop stars, TV shows, etc. Lets face it, most people really don't care what I like or think so its pointless wasting time telling them. You've got the work and hobbies listed. Be happy with that.
